Sustainable road construction specialists PRG Scotland is carrying out trials of waste tyre-derived pothole repair materials in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council as part of the UK Government-backed Live Labs 2 initiative, which supports innovation focusing on decarbonising local road infrastructure, says Tyre & Rubber Recycling.

The additive is made from end-of-life tyres and is designed to improve bitumen performance while lowering its associated carbon footprint. By incorporating recycled tyre material with road repair applications, the solution aims to contribute to Net Zero targets and promote greater circularity within the construction sector.

In addition to reducing emissions, the pothole repair material also supports domestic resource recovery by limiting the export of waste tyres and encouraging their reuse within UK infrastructure projects. The trial marks a collaborative effort between local government, national innovation programmes and industry stakeholders to evaluate lower-carbon alternatives for road maintenance and repair. Further updates are expected as the project progresses.
