Residents and road users in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead will now benefit from safer streets with improved traffic flow, following the completion of a major programme of traffic signal and pedestrian crossing upgrades.

Funded through the national Traffic Signal Obsolescence Grant and the Green Light Fund, the year-long programme has delivered a wide range of improvements throughout the Royal Borough. These include the refurbishment of key junctions in Maidenhead and Wraysbury, upgrades to pedestrian crossings in Windsor and Ascot, and broader enhancements to traffic signalling across the entire network.

The scheme has introduced modern Puffin crossings alongside intelligent traffic signal control systems and smart pedestrian detection technology. Together, these upgrades help optimise traffic movement for vehicles while making it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross.

Additionally, the improvements support the council’s cleaner, greener and safer programme with a focus on sustainability. The installation of extra-low-voltage LED signals will significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, while modernised equipment is designed to minimise the need for disruptive road closures during future maintenance.

A total of £523,000 in central government funding was secured and invested in planning and delivering the improvements, ensuring long-term benefits for residents and visitors alike.
