A million Londoners face 20mph fines in “war on motorists”

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is set to issue one million speeding tickets for breaching 20mph limits this year amid what has been described as a “war on motorists”.

According to the Birmngham Mail Mr Khan hopes to have 136 miles of roads in inner and outer London with a 20mph speed limit by the end of the year. The latest TfL figures show every four cars registered in London received a speeding fine in the past six years.

Motorists could receive a £100 fine and three penalty points added to a licence as new cameras are rolled out in a clampdown. 595,000 tickets have been issued to drivers by the Metropolitan Police since 2018, equivalent to 85 per cent of the 700,000 fines handed out across the country during the period.

Speeding fines were primarily given to drivers who breached the 20mph limit, with charges up 700 per cent since 2018. In 2023, drivers in 20mph and 30mph zones were fined eight times more than those driving above 60mph.

TfL detailed: “The laser cameras, which are operated by a team of police community support officers for the first time, complement other policing and enforcement activities to tackle speeding. This includes London’s extensive fixed safety camera network, police roadside enforcement using speed guns, and Community Roadwatch, where community volunteers work with police to educate speeding motorists about the dangers and consequences of speeding.”
