A66 to close in both directions due to forecast of snow

The A66 in Cumbria has been closed in both directions from 04:00 this morning due to severe weather which has been forecast in the region. The closure is taking place between Cumbria Gates and Bowes Snowgates.

Forecasts indicate 8-12cm of snow, combined with strong winds of up to 60mph, presenting a high risk of drifting snow and hazardous driving conditions.

The closure is being implemented as a precautionary measure and will remain in place until conditions improve and it is safe to reopen the route.

National Highways are advising drivers to plan ahead and consider alternative routes.
