B&NES Council launches consultations on long-term transport strategies

Bold new ideas for future transport networks in Bath & North East Somerset have been published today and the council is inviting people to have their say.

Bath & North East Somerset Council has launched consultations on two transport strategies aimed at giving local communities a significant voice in shaping the future of travel over the next 20 years.

The two strategies, Creating Sustainable Communities in North East Somerset: The Journey to Net Zero and the Active Travel Masterplan, have been developed over the last two years following extensive engagement with local communities and stakeholders.

Creating Sustainable Communities in North East Somerset: The Journey to Net Zero outlines proposals focused on four areas: Keynsham & Saltford, the Somer Valley, Hicks Gate and Whitchurch Village.

This transport strategy looks to provide more travel opportunities to enable people to choose to walk, wheel, cycle and use public transport. It also recognises that occasionally car usage is essential and necessary, when sustainable travel is not an option. It plays a crucial role in creating better connected, healthier and more sustainable communities.

The Active Travel Masterplan is a comprehensive plan that sets out the existing and future network of active travel infrastructure. It will enable walking, cycling, and other forms of active travel, ensuring safer, healthier, and more accessible transportation options for everyone. It will support all types of journey including commuting, education, leisure and tourism.

An interactive map showcasing active travel routes across Bath and North East Somerset will also allow people to make suggestions for further active travel routes.

Councillor Sarah Warren, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency and Sustainable Travel, said: “We are keen to hear from people across Bath and North East Somerset to help shape the future of transport in our area. These strategies represent a significant step towards creating sustainable and active communities and will help us secure the funding we need for delivery. Your input is crucial in making this vision a reality. Together, we can build a transport network that works for everyone, both now and for generations to come.”
