Bus Users UK has commended the announcement from the Department for Transport that £73.2m is being made available to deliver 484 new zero emission buses across England. The investment will replace older diesel vehicles, cut harmful emissions and improve journeys for passengers travelling for work, education, healthcare and leisure.
Buses are already cleaner per passenger than private cars and increasing the number of zero emission vehicles on the roads will have far-reaching health impacts, reducing harmful emissions and improving air quality in towns and cities. From Sheffield’s 186 new buses to expanded fleets across the North East, the Midlands and the South, the benefits of the green transition will be felt across England, reinforcing the bus as a vital driver of social inclusion, connectivity and local economic growth.
The vehicles themselves will transform daily travel for thousands of people, offering smoother, quieter journeys and modern amenities, including USB charging and enhanced accessibility. Not only will this benefit current passengers, it will encourage modal shift by making bus travel a more attractive, reliable and sustainable option.
Commenting on the announcement Lydia Horbury, Chief Executive of Bus Users UK, said:
“This is a real boost for the country and the planet. It will offer passengers a first-class experience and make it easier to leave the car at home and choose sustainable travel. Cleaner, greener buses aren’t just better for the people who rely on them every day, they’re better for everyone.”
