Specialist repair crews will tackle potholes and road surface damage caused by winter conditions across Essex.
Essex Highways’ new winter crews are funded by the Members’ Highways Initiative (MHI), launched last year by Essex County Council in addition to normal highways maintenance.
The MHI lets Essex County Councillors identify highways issues in their local areas for priority repairs.
More than 9,000 repairs, in addition to regular highways maintenance, were carried out across Essex between April and November 2024 thanks to the MHI.
Winter crews based in north and south Essex will proactively address road defects affected by ice, snow, winds and so on if no specific repairs are identified by councillors.
The teams will work across the county until April 2025 to improve safety for residents and road users, supporting Essex Highways’ ongoing maintenance activities.
Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure and Sustainable Transport at Essex County Council, said: “Winter weather can take a serious toll on roads, and we are committed to helping residents travel safely and confidently.
“These dedicated winter crews will help us act quicker on issues flagged by councillors to make Essex safer.”
