East Sussex: Lewes District Council to fund active travel bridge

A new pedestrian and cycle bridge is a step closer to offering a safer route between two communities. The bridge would span the River Ouse, connecting Lewes and Hamsey, according to the Argus.

A commitment of £558,000 in Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding has been approved in principle by Lewes District Council’s cabinet, subject to planning permission.

Cllr Laurence O’Connor, cabinet member for planning and infrastructure, said:

“Delivering this link between Lewes and Hamsey has been a long-held ambition, and I’m delighted we’re now able to take it forward. A dedicated walking and cycling route will give people a safer, more enjoyable way to travel between the two communities while opening up better access to the countryside.

“It marks a significant step in our wider work to expand sustainable transport options across the district.”

The funding is contingent on it being matched by the South Downs National Park Authority and Wealden District Council.

The proposed bridge would form part of a greener travel network and offer further access into the South Downs National Park.
