ITS Australia announced as host of the 5th International Symposium on Free and Tollway Operations

ITS Australia is proud to announce that it will serve as the official host of the 5th International Symposium on Free and Tollway Operations (ISFO), taking place from 25 to 27 May 2027 in Melbourne, Australia.

This landmark event will bring together world-leading experts, innovators, policymakers, and industry leaders to collaborate on advancing road infrastructure, traffic management, and tollway operations and will help cement Melbourne’s reputation as a dynamic, world-class destination for major technological and trade events.

Cohosted by the Transport Research Board (TRB) and ITS Australia, the 2027 symposium marks the first time the event will be hosted in Australia, underscoring the country’s growing leadership in transport innovation, and will be delivered in partnership with a truly global consortium, including Victorian Government’s Department of Transport and Planning, National Transport Research Organisation (NTRO), AASHTO, AustriaTech, ITS America, ITS Nationals, ERTICO and ITS Asia Pacific,

The ISFO is a prestigious global symposium, founded by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) – a division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in the United States. It has been held at notable international venues since its inception in 2006, including Athens, Honolulu, Berlin, and Vienna.

Melbourne, renowned for its vibrant culture and world-class connectivity, offers an ideal setting for this event, which serves as a unique platform to explore the latest technological advancements, policy developments, and operational strategies shaping the future of transportation systems globally.

This year’s ISFO will also incorporate the annual ITS Australia Roads, Tolling & Tech conference, enriching the program and providing attendees with enhanced opportunities for knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration across transport sectors.

“We are honoured to host the 5th ISFO in Melbourne. This event represents a significant opportunity for Australia to showcase its leadership in intelligent transport systems and tolling innovations while fostering global partnerships,” said Susan Harris, CEO of ITS Australia.

“ISFO was formed in 2006 to provide a platform for the brightest minds in freeway and tollway operations around the globe to discuss and share their experiences. Australia has long been recognised as a leader and innovator in managed motorways. We are excited to bring the symposium to Melbourne and learn about the region’s dynamic role in shaping the future of traffic operations,” added Jeff Adler, Principal at Kemp Mill Consulting and ISFO Program Committee Co-Chair.
