Kapsch TrafficCom is proud to announce that it will deliver and operate an end-to-end truck tolling system for Via Lietuva, the roadway institution of Lithuania.
The Vienna-based company will deliver the satellite tolling system within the next eight months and manage technical operations for five years. The tolling scheme (titled e-tolling in Lithuania), which covers 2,851 km of roads, will toll all regular vehicles with a weight of more than 3.5 tons. The project value amounts to EUR 13.4 million (excluding VAT).
The public tender for this project is the first of its kind globally that envisioned toll processing via a dedicated smartphone app. As part of the project, Kapsch TrafficCom will deliver a satellite-based solution that will toll users based on the actual distance driven on the road network, as opposed to the previously-used vignette system.
Juras Taminskas, Minister of Transport and Communications of Lithuania, said:
“The signing of this agreement marks a turning point: after five years of stagnation, the e-tolling project is finally being implemented. Lithuania becomes the first Baltic country to introduce e-tolling. We are applying the right principle: those who drive and pollute more contribute more to the maintenance of roads. At the same time, it is also a technological breakthrough: e-tolling will contribute to the safety and intelligence of
Lithuania’s roads.”
Carolin Treichl, EVP EMEA at Kapsch TrafficCom, adds:
“We will deliver a complete user experience with our toll app – a true one-stop shop. From the GDPR-compliant handling of location data to displaying toll amounts, payment processes and previous trips, this is a milestone for our industry.”
