Legacy document shares smart motorway programme learnings

SMP Alliance, the contemporary integrated enterprise created by National Highways to deliver the smart motorway programme (SMP), has published a document that covers the nine-year period from the Alliance’s conception in 2017, mobilisation in 2020, subsequent works delivery through to 2025 and planned handover in 2026.

Designed to benefit future highways projects, as well as the wider infrastructure, construction and civil engineering sectors, SMP Alliance Legacy & Learnings provides a flavour and understanding of the Alliance’s structure and collaborative ways of working.

Based on Project 13 principles, the structure and working approaches drew from the seven SMP Alliance partner organisations, namely National Highways as the client member, Fluor as the production management partner, WSP and Jacobs as the digitally-enabled design partners, along with three on-site assembly partners in Balfour Beatty, Costain and bmJV (the BAM / Morgan Sindall joint venture). Together they were supported by over 100 suppliers.

The 104-page SMP Alliance Legacy & Learnings document contains insightful examples and case studies, as well as considered reflections spanning experiences, challenges, solutions and significant achievements across multiple schemes, teams and disciplines. Fully illustrated throughout with diagrams and photos, it also includes links to videos, animations and other useful publications.

The document is openly available online via the following link: SMP Alliance Legacy & Learnings
