Over 45 schemes have now been completed across Nottingham as part of the city’s Streets for People programme. Using £5.85 million investment from the Government’s Local Transport Plan, we are continuing with the Streets for People programme to improve roads/paths and make walking and cycling easier and safer.
The roads chosen for improvement have been put forward by local people and prioritised by councillors. The programme consists of standard road resurfacing and preventative maintenance to ensure the funds go as far as possible. This approach allows the team to cover a larger area and upgrade more roads in the city. The money will be used to improve the worst-affected roads and pavements. The work for phase two of the Streets for People programme is on track to finish in September 2025.
Across all twenty areas in the city pavements and walkways are being upgraded to make them safer, especially taking into consideration the needs of older people and those with less mobility. Roads and cycle paths are being repaired to enhance safety and improve traffic flow, while new bins are being installed to create nicer and cleaner neighbourhoods.
Some of the completed roads and paths include Fenwick Road, Broadhurst Avenue, Egypt Road, Plumptre Street, Brewsters Road & Kilbourn Street. A lot of further schemes have been planned on roads including Robin Hood Street in St Ann’s, Squires Avenue in Bulwell and many more. Over 6km of road resurfacing and surface treatments have been completed so far.
Local signage and leaflets are being used to update residents on upcoming works near them, and the team has been asking residents for their feedback via an online survey.
Nottingham City Council Leader and Executive Member for Strategic Regeneration, Transport and Communications, Councillor Neghat Khan said:
“The Streets for People programme is making a real difference in areas across the city, improving the roads and footpaths that people use every day. By listening to residents and working with councillors, we are ensuring that the most needed improvements are prioritised. I’m delighted to see the progress on phase two so far and look forward to even more improvements in the months ahead.”
