Portsmouth City Council has developed an online form to help improve safety on city roads and pavements by encouraging ‘near miss’ reporting. This adds to an existing form for cycling near miss reporting. Both forms are intended to give people who have experienced unsafe behaviour from other road users while walking or cycling the chance to challenge and report it.

The walking near miss form will be used to gather important data about the city’s network of roads, pavements and shared-use paths, as well as behaviours of other road users. This will support existing collision data and identify any additional areas with potential to be improved across the city, helping to improve walking and cycling routes and prevent future incidents.

Examples of a near miss could include:

• *having to step back from the kerb when a car has passed too close
• *a car, lorry or bus not stopping at a zebra crossing
• *a cyclist passing too closely on a shared cycle/walking path
• *a car mounting a kerb
• *a vehicle crossing a cyclist’s path

Cllr Lynne Stagg, Cabinet Member for Traffic and Transportation, said: “I really welcome this reporting tool and encourage anyone who has experienced any behaviour that’s made them feel unsafe when walking or cycling to let us know.

“If you’ve ever been surprised or rattled by any vehicle passing too close to you when you’re walking in the city, whether motorised or not, please report it and help us make Portsmouth’s roads and pavements safer spaces for everyone.”
