Oxford’s temporary congestion charge has gone live this morning. The temporary initiative from Oxfordshire County Council will reduce traffic in the city while Botley Road remains closed, preventing the start of the traffic filter trial.
The temporary congestion charge is located at points on six roads in Oxford. Cars with permits and all other vehicles can pass through the charge locations for free. Without a permit, a charge of £5 per day will be payable to drive a car through the six congestion charge locations.
The interim scheme will contribute towards creating a healthier, more accessible and attractive city. It will improve bus services, with both major bus companies operating in the city announcing changes to their services as a result of the scheme, and the county council providing free park and ride bus journeys in Oxford for an initial period of three months. It will also make it easier for those with permits, including carers, traders and blue badge holders, to travel by car into and around Oxford.
Councillor Andrew Gant, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport Management, said:
“I am very pleased that Stagecoach and Oxford Bus Company have come forward with significant service improvements, and that we as a council are able to offer the benefit of free park and ride bus travel, as a result of this scheme.
“We will be watching the impacts carefully as residents, visitors and businesses adjust to the temporary congestion charge.”
Up to two adults and three children with a valid park and ride parking ticket will be able to claim free travel to and from park and ride sites in the city. The tickets will be valid on any Stagecoach, Oxford Bus Company or Thames Travel bus that visits an Oxford park and ride site, not just named park and ride services.
There are many different permit types available that allow free travel through the congestion charge points. Permit applications covering different circumstances can be made from the county council website, including for residents, traders, carers and blue badge holders. To find out about different permits and exemptions, visit the congestion charge website.
Those driving in a car without a permit can pay the congestion charge online by midnight on the day after driving through one of the six charge locations – no account is needed. There is also an option to pay by phone.
