WORK to repair a 1-kilometre section of road in Powys will see some motorists face a diversion of around 2 hours, and force them to travel an extra 60 miles.

The Powys County Times says that work on the section of the A40 trunk road in south Powys will commence on Tuesday night, March 12, and last for 11 nights, meaning the road between Crickhowell and Abergavenny will be impassable from the hours of 7pm and 7am.

The work is so essential carriageway resurfacing and ancillary works can be undertaken on a 1km stretch in the south Powys village of Glangrwyney, near Crickhowell, on the Powys-Monmouthshire border.

“The work will be carried out at night from 7pm-7am under a full closure of the A40 (from 250 metres east of the Monmouthshire/Powys county boundary to Dan-y-Gollen junction, Glangrwyney),” said a spokesperson for Traffic Wales.

“The works are being carried out overnight when traffic flows are lower, to minimise disruption.”

Motorists needing to travel to Abergavenny from Powys will now have to do so via the A40 at Brecon, heading over the Brecon Beacons road and turning for Ebbw Vale at Merthyr.

“The signed diversion route for eastbound traffic will be via the westbound A40 to Brecon, southbound A470 to Merthyr Tydfil and eastbound A465 to re-join the A40 at Abergavenny: vice versa for westbound traffic,” added the Traffic Wales statement.
