A highways project to improve two key Burton town centre junctions is progressing well and remains on schedule to complete next week.
Staffordshire County Council’s highways crews are currently resurfacing the junction of Union Street, Orchard Street and New Street. Works also include the New Street traffic island, along with the High Street and Manor Drive approaches.
The last two weeks have seen crews remove ironworks, replace damaged kerbs, begin to plane out the road and lay the new binder course on top, so it is ready for the new surface.
Crews will continue working under overnight closures until Friday 8 August to resurface the junctions with minimal disruption to the community. They will also paint on fresh road markings and install new ironworks and traffic sensors. The work will take place from Mondays through to Thursdays.
This project, costing around £600,000, remains on track to complete on Friday 8 August.
To help support local businesses during these essential maintenance works, the county council has worked with East Staffordshire Borough Council to provide free evening parking for customers of The Long Hop, a new pub opening on Manor Drive on Friday 1 August.
From today (Wednesday 30 July) to Friday 8 August only, parking will be free after 6pm at Fleet Street Car Park so local businesses can continue to welcome customers with minimal disruption during the improvements.

“It’s fantastic to see the significant progress our teams are making on the Union Street and New Street junction improvements in Burton town centre. These roads have seen years of heavy use, resulting in considerable wear and tear, and we’re now delivering the much-needed reconstruction they require.
“Our crews have been working overnight to keep disruption to a minimum and we remain on track to complete the scheme by next week. We’ve also worked closely with East Staffordshire Borough Council to support local businesses during this time, including providing free evening parking for customers of The Long Hop pub ahead of its opening, ensuring the town can stay open for business throughout the works.”
