The landlords of a pub near Bristol have cites roadworks as a significant factor in them losing in the region of £40,000 and deciding to leave the establishment.
The team at The Old Inn in Congresbury say the works on the A370 were the “final nail in the coffin” for their 16th-century inn, says Bristol World. In a Facebook post, Ricky Baillie, who has run the pub with his partner Kailem for the last five years, wrote:
“It is with an incredibly heavy heart that Kailem, Kirstie and I have taken the decision to leave The Old Inn. This is not a decision that has been taken lightly, but in light of the current financial climate we are sadly left with no other option.
“As we are all aware, this country is in the middle of a cost of living crisis. People are struggling to pay their bills, let alone find spare cash to enjoy a pint or a meal out. We are dealing with extortionate rises in rent, rates, beer, beer gas, utilities, and national insurance contributions. Even the price of crisps has risen!
“The final nail in the coffin was the Wales & West roadworks on the A370 which saw us lose a staggering £38k in revenue as customers just couldn’t get to us. We have loved every minute we have spent in this pub. Kirstie and the team have been fantastic.”
