Shannonside: Over €4.5 million spent on local Active Travel projects in 2024

Over €4.5 million was spent to deliver active travel projects across the Shannonside region last year, a report has revealed. The 2024 Local Government Climate Action Key Performance Indicators Report monitors the adoption of climate measures across all local authorities in Ireland, says Shannonside.ie.

It also tracks how counties use allocated funding to deliver cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. In 2024, over €3 million was spent to deliver 1.3 kilometres of active travel projects in Co. Roscommon, while Longford delivered 17 projects last year totalling €2.5 million, an addition of 6.7 kilometres to the nation’s active travel infrastructure.

In Leitrim €1.4 million was spent on 1.1 kilometres of active travel infrastructure.

Local Green Party member Leslie O’Hora said that although ‘great strides’ have been be made, more needs to be done and the figures were ‘disappointing’.
