Shropshire CC launches road safety education programme for primary schools

Shropshire Council’s sustainable travel team has launched ‘Our Journey’ – an engaging new virtual road safety education programme for primary schools across the county.

Designed to empower students with essential safety skills for independent and sustainable travel, the programme combines creativity, technology, and local collaboration to make road safety education more accessible and fun than ever.

Shropshire schoolchildren were invited to design road safety-themed superheroes (pictured) to feature in the virtual sessions, adding a local, personal, and imaginative touch to the programme. These colourful, relatable characters serve as role models in the programme, delivering crucial road safety tips in an engaging and memorable way.

Delivered entirely online, ‘Our Journey’ makes road safety education available to schools across Shropshire. This approach ensures accessibility for all primary schools, regardless of location, while providing a flexible and interactive learning experience. The programme covers essential topics such as safe walking practices, scooter safety, and how to recognize and respond to potential hazards on the journey to school.

For pupils in Reception, the programme also includes a captivating virtual story session: “Mary and Tom’s Journey to School.” This heartwarming tale introduces road safety concepts through the eyes of two young children as they navigate their way to school. The story has been brought to life with illustrations designed by award-winning local artist Emma Lawrence, whose vibrant artwork adds depth and charm to the narrative.

Kirstie Hurst-Knight, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for children and education, said: “We’re incredibly proud to launch ‘Our Journey’ the virtual road safety education programme that not only teaches children how to stay safe but also encourages them to embrace active and sustainable travel. The involvement of students in designing superheroes and working with Emma Lawrence has made the initiative truly unique and meaningful. Together, we’re helping to build safer, greener communities across Shropshire.”
