smartmicro breaks own radar installation record

A new milestone for intelligent traffic detection in the UK has been reached by smartmicro UK. Until recently, Marsh Mills Roundabout in Plymouth held the record for the largest single smartmicro radar installation, with 10 UMRR-11 radars monitoring traffic movements. That record has now been overtaken.|

Redmoor Roundabout, Bletchley (Milton Keynes) takes the crown with 12 smartmicro radars installed – the largest single installation of its kind in the UK to date. Redmoor is no ordinary roundabout. It sits at the heart of Milton Keynes’ iconic grid road system, a 1960s new-town design built around high-capacity H (east-west) and V (north-south) routes. As a signal-controlled, grade-separated junction, Redmoor handles complex,
high-volume movements linking the A5, A421, V6 Grafton Street and H9 Groveway, including significant commuter and freight traffic.

The November–December upgrade saw 12 UMRR-11 radars deployed for stop-line detection and MOVA operation, carefully planned by Kimberley Dunsford (smartmicro UK). A key part of the design was eliminating any risk of cross-channel interference between radars, achieved through the strategic use of multiple UMRR-11 model variants across the site.

The installation was delivered by telent on behalf of the client, with commissioning completed by smartmicro UK engineers in December 2025. This project highlights how advanced radar detection continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible at complex, high-demand junctions – improving efficiency, resilience and traffic flow at scale.
