Speed cameras to be installed at Huddersfield accident ‘black spot’

Kirklees Council in West Yorkshire has confirmed that a notorious Huddersfield junction will soon be getting speed cameras.

The Sovereign junction in Shepley is widely considered to be an accident blackspot, and has been the site of dozens of crashes, including two fatalities, reports Yorkshire Live. This prompted local councillor, John Taylor to launch a petition demanding council action at this site and the neighbouring Carr Lane/Cross Lane junction. This surpassed 3,000 signatures.

The junction made headlines more recently due to its proximity to a proposed housing development of 123-homes in Upper Cumberworth. Villagers fear that the addition of new homes would increase traffic and prove “a disaster”. Developer, Vivly Living, said the company had worked closely with residents and amended plans following consultation to “alleviate fears”.

Off the back of the petition, Kirklees Council agreed that the area qualified for a speed camera to help tackle the number and severity of accidents. The local authority has now set out its plans and a timeline for the installation of two new cameras.
