Staffordshire’s new approach to roads makes progress

Early improvements are already being made to how the county’s roads are managed, after Staffordshire County Council launched a new approach in October 2025.

The county council’s scrutiny committee has heard how Staffordshire’s Roadmap to a Better Network is starting to make a difference to how highways are managed.

Since its launch last year, highways engineers have changed the way they plan works so they cause less disruption on the highways network and help keep Staffordshire moving.

Improved condition surveys are helping to spot problems earlier too, so issues can be sorted before they get worse.

Added to this, residents are getting clearer updates about upcoming works, making it easier to understand what’s happening in their area.

In January, the county council announced an extra £15 million over the next two years to tackle the backlog of road defects. These will be identified by local repair teams, another key aspect of the Roadmap, who know their patches well and can act quickly when problems arise.

Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways said:

“With national funding for roads under pressure, we’re reviewing the best long‑term approach to maintaining Staffordshire’s roads so taxpayers get the best value for money.

“There’s still more to do, and with the decades of underfunding our roads are in a fragile state, but the early progress of the Roadmap is an encouraging step towards better, safer and more reliable roads across Staffordshire.

“We know residents expect roads that are safe, reliable and well looked after, and we also understand the frustration that comes when reality doesn’t always match that expectation.

“We’re already seeing early improvements in how quickly and effectively we can respond to issues, and we’re working hard to make sure those improvements are felt consistently across the county. There’s still a way to go, but we’re committed to being open about our progress and continuing to improve the network in a way that genuinely makes a difference for local people.”
