Road traffic officers in Wales have flagged a “disturbing surge” in verbal abuse and intimidation at roadworks. They’re now calling for two weeks of “caution and kindness” on the country’s roads to safeguard both workers and drivers.

The Welsh Trunk Road Agents, which maintains the country’s strategic roads, and Traffic Wales, which manages the network, have highlighted a “concerning trend” in which roadworks rage appears to be on the rise. In 2023 alone, 74 incidents were reported in Wales but the true figure is thought to be much higher, says the North Wales Daily Post.

As annual maintenance projects step up during the spring, all road users are being asked to drive cautiously through roadworks and show respect for the people working on them. Overnight closures of the A55 westbound Penmaenbach tunnel start this evening (Monday, April 8) with traffic batched in alternate directions around Penmaenbach headland via traffic lights. These measures, operating between 7pm-7am, will continue until April 23.
