The future of more than 160 transport projects across the West Midlands will become clearer over the coming months. Up to 168 schemes were being assessed through the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) before a decision is made on how to allocate £2.4bn of transport funding, says the BBC.
Every project would be assessed on criteria including economic benefits before “transparent decisions” were made, the authority’s interim chief executive Ed Cox said.
Some schemes, including the Metro extension to the £3bn Sports Quarter and Birmingham City FC’s new stadium (pictured) and investment into Witton and Aston Railway stations to support Aston Villa, have already been taken to the WMCA board.
Once projects had been categorised according to what stage they are at development funding could be allocated, Cox said, but huge sums would not be committed to projects still a concept stage.
A paper will go to the authority’s board in February which will start to outline that process.
Cox said he hoped that by Autumn that would be a clear process for every project.
