Westcotec have welcomed the Government’s new Road Safety Strategy, recognising its strong emphasis on data, prevention and shared responsibility as a significant step forward in reducing deaths and serious injuries on UK roads.
Central to the strategy is a new Road Safety Investigation Branch, which will use linked police and healthcare data to drive evidence‑based interventions. Westcotec’s advanced data collection and analysis solutions, including its Westconnect platform, are already helping local authorities monitor risk and justify safety investment with robust, real-time insight.
The strategy singles out younger drivers, motorcyclists and older road users as high‑risk groups requiring focused attention. Westcotec’s intelligent detection and collision reduction systems include cyclist awareness and pedestrian detection tools, designed to provide dynamic information for drivers and to help prevent collisions.
Another key focus is work‑related road safety, where the newly launched National Work‑Related Road Safety Charter aims to support employers in improving fleet standards. Understanding that one in three fatal collisions involves someone driving for work, Westcotec’s connected technologies offer fleet operators smart, compliant solutions that safeguard drivers and other road users.
Addressing illegal activity on the roads, such as uninsured driving and non‑compliant vehicles, the strategy also reinforces the role of ANPR systems – an area in which Westcotec continues to innovate through enhanced software solutions. As an employee-owned company with 25 years of experience and proven partnerships across the UK, Westcotec remains committed to working collaboratively with authorities, police and other road safety bodies to bring smarter, more responsive safety technology into everyday use.
Speaking on an industry webinar in which various components of the Strategy were anaylsed, Westcotec managing director Chris Spinks (pictured) said:
“The main thing for us is the recognition in the Strategy that technology is a key element in casualty reduction. We’re not just responding to change, we are helping to shape it. Our approach to road safety is built on the principle that innovation and education are the preferred outcomes we all strive for before enforcement becomes necessary.
“This strategy reflects our belief that safer roads are achieved through collaboration, intelligent technology and proactive solutions that encourage positive behaviour long before penalties are required.”
