The first phase of works on a project to improve cycling, walking and wheeling infrastructure in Whitehaven will get underway this week.
Cumberland Council was awarded funding from the Government’s Active Travel Fund to deliver the work on Route 14 of the Whitehaven Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) through the South Whitehaven area.
Route 14 is also part of the National Cycle Network (NCN 72 – Hadrian’s Cycleway and NCN7 – Sea to Sea, also known as the C2C) and consists of both on an off-road cycle provision which links Stanley View to Esk Avenue in Whitehaven.
Proposed improvements include the widening of the shared use cycleway/footway and changes to traffic signs and road markings to promote Active Travel.
The council’s specialist highways engineers will undertake the work which will be done in phases over the summer and autumn months.
The first phase of work will start at Esk Avenue and users of this part of the route will be required to follow the diversion route.
