Wiltshire: Next phase of Longfield Gyratory improvements begins this week

Wiltshire Council is advising residents, businesses and road users in Trowbridge of upcoming traffic management changes as the Longfield Gyratory improvement works move into a new phase.

The next steps of the programme will require two significant closures on County Way, between the junction with Dursley Road and the Longfield Gyratory, beginning on Thursday 22 January.

The work to the gyratory will improve traffic flow and overall safety around the gyratory, and also boost cycling and walking connections.

The next construction phase will require the following closures:

County Way southbound closure, 22 January-6 February

  • During this period, no southbound traffic will be permitted to travel from the Longfield Gyratory towards Bradley Road.

However:

  • Access from Bradley Road to the gyratory will remain open.
  • Access between Dursley Road and Bradley Road will also remain possible.

County Way northbound closure, 9 February-20 March

  • During this stage, vehicles will be unable to travel northbound from Bradley Road or Dursley Road towards the Longfield Gyratory.
  • Temporary traffic signals will be installed at the junction of Mortimer Street and Longfield Road to ensure safe vehicle movements out of Mortimer Street.

However:

  • Access from the gyratory towards Bradley Road and Dursley Road will remain available.

A signed diversion route will be in place throughout both closure periods, supported by advance warning signage positioned around the outskirts of the town to guide drivers to the most appropriate alternative routes.

Cllr Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these essential works and recognise that they will cause unavoidable disruption, particularly given the scale of the County Way closures.

“Once complete, these improvements to the gyratory will improve traffic flow and increase capacity to account for the increased number of vehicles that will use the roads in the coming years. They will also upgrade the outdated traffic signals, enhance safety for all road users, and improve pedestrian sand cyclist safety and accessibility to the new Trowbridge leisure centre that is under construction.

“We have taken care to put appropriate diversions and local safety measures in place, and we thank residents, businesses and road users for their continued patience as we deliver long-term improvements for Trowbridge.”
