As reported in Highways News last month, Zipcar has confirmed that it is to cease UK operations within weeks, with 650,000 drivers set to be impacted, says the Evening Standard.
The US-based company, owned by car rental giant Avis Budget, announced the proposed exit in December last year, pending the outcome of a consultation with its 71 employees.
An Avis Budget spokesperson said the decision to cease trading in the UK from 2026 was part of a plan “to streamline operations, improve returns, and position the company for long-term sustainability and growth”.
Now, the company has confirmed it will end operations in the UK following a formal consultation with its employees. Drivers will see their accounts deactivated in 30 day’s time, while customers will be unable to make new bookings.
In an email to customers, James Taylor, general manager for Zipcar, wrote:
“On 1 December 2025 we announced that we were proposing to cease the UK operations of Zipcar. Following formal consultation with our UK employees, we can now confirm that Zipcar will cease operating in the UK.
“In accordance with clause 7.5 of the member terms, please take this as your written notice that we will formally close your account in 30 days’ time.
“It’s not possible to make any new bookings with Zipcar UK at this time, but your account will remain open until 16 February 2026.”
