20% RAP material used along the A4 Froxfield

Highways and streetlighting maintenance company VolkerHighways has resurfaced a 2.2 mile (3.5km) section of the A4, between Hungerford and Wiltshire boarder using 20% Recycled Asphalt Product (RAP) surface course material.

Works were delivered in partnership with West Berkshire Council.

Last year, VolkerHighways worked closely with FM Conway and Inlay Management Services to lay 2.5 miles of 20% RAP. Following this, the company says it has now completed the second stage of the programme using the same Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) 14mm PSV 65 warm mix (WM) material.

Works were carried out over six nights in early July laying around 600t per night. In total, 3,531t was laid over 31,651m2.

It explains carbon savings are derived from an increase in Recycled Asphalt Product with an associated reduction in primary aggregate, as well as the savings from Warm Mix Asphalt. SMA 14mm Surf 40/60 PSV65 WM 20% RAP uses 48.95kg/t to produce compared to SurePhalt 14 Surf 40/60 CL942 PSV65 Fib* Hot Mix which uses 55.17kg/t leading to 6.22kg/T CO2e saving.

In total, nearly 22,000kg CO2e was saved compared to using a traditional material. That’s the equivalent of driving around the world almost four times.

VolkerHighways worked with WJ to install 3M 301 road studs which have now been adopted for use by West Berkshire Council on all A roads. These studs are virtually maintenance free and are eight times more reflective than a conventional style stud.

Councillor Stuart Gourley, Executive Member for the Environment and Highways at West Berkshire Council, said: “West Berkshire Council is committed to exploring opportunities to reduce carbon emissions by targeting our operations that would traditionally be carbon intensive. This recent resurfacing project on the A4, delivered in partnership with VolkerHighway, is a testament to our dedication to sustainable practices.

“These innovative methods not only help us achieve our ambitious target of net zero by 2030 but also improve our highways for residents across West Berkshire. We are proud to work with partners who share our commitment to sustainability and efficiency.”
