Traffic grows 20% but still no morning peak

This latest travel data report from the Transport Technology Forum suggests a 20 per cent increase in road traffic volumes in the week to 14th June, yet no return to the AM peak.

Each week the TTF publishes a summary of data gathered from a range of local authorities across the country, providing an overview of how public behaviour is changing as a result of Coronavirus restrictions being eased.

The report suggests that the observed flattening of road demand could be because of flexible working hours, home working and continued school closures for many.

The report also includes a new table comparing cycling with rainfall, confirming that observed cycling levels are clearly impacted by wet weather.

There are also examples of best practice shared by local authorities including highlighting an initiative to allow the public to report places where they think changes to road layout are needed to support safe, sustainable travel, changes to bike hire schemes to encourage, or react to, increased take-up, road layout improvements and the underwriting of schemes to enable quicker introduction.

The TTF believes this report helps authorities understand whether travel habits are returning to normal or what new patterns are being experienced. Local Authorities can benefit by being able to compare what is happening in their areas with the national picture, allowing local and national comparisons to be drawn.
