Details of the roads that will be upgraded as part of Barnet Council’s 2026-27 Improving Barnet’s Roads and Pavements have been published.
Following approval by the council’s Cabinet in December 2025, £15.52m will be invested in the next 12-month phase of road and pavements improvements. The money is part of the £97m package announced in 2024.
The 2026/27 investment comprises £9m spent on roads, £3.4m on pavement, £2.52m on drainage, structures and other assets, and £600,000 set aside for any additional works that are required outside of the current programme of improvements.
Cllr Alan Schneiderman, Cabinet Member for Environment & Climate Change, said:
“Our investment in roads and pavements is not just about maintaining and fixing the network, but also promoting active travel and reducing carbon from highways maintenance as we strive to become a net zero borough by 2042.”
Roads and pavements for the ‘Improving Barnet’s Roads and Pavements programme’ are selected following an independent condition survey.
Each year, the 723km of Barnets maintained roads and 1,290km of pavements are surveyed and their condition recorded. Roads and pavements are then selected for the planned works programme based on their condition. The approach ensures that the work programme maximises the investment by prioritising those roads and pavements in most need of repair.
Alongside the ‘Improving Barnet’s Roads and Pavements programme’, the council also undertakes reactive maintenance throughout the year. Nearly 4,000 potholes were repaired in 2025, many of which came from reports received from residents.
A new Government Highways Authority rating system ranked Barnet Council as the leading London borough for how effectively best practice in highways maintenance is followed. The rankings also put Barnet as second in London for its investment programme.
