Sensys Gatso wins multi-million dollar contract for New York school zone speed enforcement

Sensys Gatso Group has been awarded a five-year contract to manage the city of Schenectady, New York’s school zone safety programme. The multi-million-dollar contract will be fulfilled by Sensys Gatso USA, the Swedish company’s American subsidiary. Cameras will be positioned on fixed poles at approximately nine school zone locations around Schenectady, providing new levels of safety for children and adults alike. The contract allows for future extensions and the inclusion of up to 20 school zones as the program evolves.

Lew Miller, Group CEO of Sensys Gatso says the agreement perfectly illustrates the company’s commitment to safety.

“There is no reason a vehicle should speed through a school zone, especially when kids are present,” he said. “At Sensys Gatso, we are proud to partner with Schenectady because safety is at the heart of everything we do and we’re confident that this program will slow drivers, change their behavior and help keep those children safe.”

Schenectady Police Chief Brian Whipple agrees.

“A school zone should be one of the safest places in our city. This initiative is about changing driver behavior and reinforcing that protecting children is non-negotiable. Slowing down isn’t a suggestion in these areas, it’s essential to keep kids safe,” he said.

The automated enforcement cameras are expected to begin capturing violator speeding data in September of this year. The new agreement includes a provision for extensions beyond the initial term and expands Sensys Gatso’s New York State footprint. The company currently provides school zone speed and red-light intersection enforcement as part of a managed service agreement with Albany, the state’s capital.

Miller believes the company’s success in New York State and around the U.S. is in part the result of Sensys Gatso’s reputation for delivering on its trusted innovation promise.

“Trust is earned,” he said. “Over the decades, we’ve learned that partnering with customers rather than simply selling to them is essential to delivering good results. Combined with our commitment to providing fully vetted, reliable solutions supported by industry leading service, it’s just good business.”
