Yunex Traffic is supporting the City of Reykjavik in advancing its urban traffic management through an innovation-driven collaboration focused on system modernisation, integration, and operational support.
The Icelandic capital operates a compact but complex traffic environment with challenging weather conditions and limited operational resources. As the capital city of an island nation, Reykjavik must balance reliability, resilience, and efficiency within particularly constrained operational conditions. Yunex Traffic works closely with the city’s traffic and public transport teams to improve reliability, flexibility, and day-to-day traffic operations while preparing the network for evolving mobility needs.
A central element of the project is the modernisation of Reykjavik’s existing installed base. Many traffic controllers in operation today have been running reliably for decades. By introducing new technology, the city can modernize controllers and signal infrastructure efficiently, without extensive on street work. This approach makes it possible to modernize critical infrastructure while maintaining uninterrupted daily operations. It supports gradual renewal, reduces disruption, and allows progress within short and weather dependent work windows.
In September 2025, Reykjavik upgraded its central traffic management system to Yutraffic Symphony. The platform provides a unified operational environment from which traffic signals and intersections across the city can be monitored and coordinated. This upgrade represents an important milestone in the way traffic operations are managed on a daily basis, creating better visibility of operations and enabling faster responses to changing traffic conditions.
Reykjavik has started deploying Yutraffic FUSION, an adaptive traffic solution that adjusts signal timings based on real traffic demand instead of fixed schedules or local traffic strategies. This supports smoother traffic flow and more flexible traffic management, particularly in complex urban areas.
In parallel, Yunex Traffic is supporting exploratory initiatives around AI-enabled traffic applications and V2X use cases. These activities focus on understanding how data, connectivity, and intelligent systems can gradually enhance traffic operations while remaining fully compatible with existing infrastructure.
The collaboration focuses on practical benefits for Reykjavik’s traffic operations. Upgrade based modernisation enables efficient implementation even under challenging weather conditions, reduces disruption on the street, and supports continuity of service. This is especially relevant for teams operating with limited resources and short implementation windows.
Close operational collaboration delivers additional value. Dedicated technical support for Yutraffic Symphony, extended expert availability, and on-site training activities help address capacity and knowledge constraints within the traffic organization. Direct interaction supports faster issue resolution, continuous improvement, and a more resilient operational setup.
