A vehicle that crossed the Menai Suspension Bridge yesterday reportedly weighed double the allowed limit. The bridge had to close for several hours as a result. Traffic Wales has since said that the vehicle weighed about 15 tonnes, with the maximum allowed being 7.5 tonnes, says the North Wales Chronicle.

Traffic Wales added that the driver had stated that the vehicle weighed 6.8 tonnes.

An investigation into the circumstances is underway, with North Wales Police and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency assisting.

Traffic Wales said:

“An overweight vehicle crossed Menai Bridge on the morning of 27 July after the driver incorrectly stated that the vehicle weighed 6.8 tonnes and was within the bridge’s 7.5-tonne weight limit.

“Subsequent investigations by the Traffic Wales control room confirmed that the vehicle actually weighed around 15 tonnes, more than double the permitted limit.

“We remind all drivers that the 7.5-tonne weight restriction on Menai Bridge is in place for safety reasons and that failure to comply with this restriction is an offence.

“Please respect the workers on site, we will not tolerate any comments that are disrespectful.

“We are working closely with North Wales Police and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency regarding this matter.”
