Abu Dhabi driverless trial sees 2,700 riders in a month

A driverless taxi service trial in Abu Dhabi, called TXAI, has seen 2,700 passengers try it out, across more than 10,000 miles of rides.

UAE newspaper Gulf News says since the service was launched in last November on Yas Island, a reclaimed area of land famous for hosting the emirate’s Grand Prix.

It says the first phase involved a set of three TXAIs offering free transport between specified locations on Yas Island, with the vehicles could be hailed through a smartphone app, and trained safety officers were present during each trip.

A second phase of the programme, scheduled for the middle of the year will include 10 TXAIs operating across numerous Abu Dhabi locations.
