The global transport modelling company Aimsun has issued a short video explaining how its software has helped re-plan traffic control strategies at a pinch point in Hamburg to improve traffic flow.
In the case study, the high number of trucks merging onto the highway near Elbtunnel was causing severe congestion, so the Siemens Mobility team used Aimsun Next traffic modelling to show the customer, Landesbetrieb Straßen, Brücken und Gewässer, Hamburg (LSBG), how different traffic control strategies could make more efficient use of existing road capacity.
The company used its Aimsun Next model to show how different control strategies can be implemented and tested them for their effectiveness in improving the traffic flow.
They showed gap metering and dynamic merging control were strategies that would reduce journey times by up to 25%.
They say the result was improved traffic flow with no need for costly infrastructure changes.
