The 40mph speed limit has been officially scrapped on almost all routes across Birmingham. Most roads now have a legal speed limit of 30mph or less with the exception of the A38(M) Aston Expressway, A456 Quinton Expressway and A4041 Queslett Road, which forms the boundary with Walsall, says the BBC.

There will be no changes to the road design or new speed cameras installed as part of the scheme but existing cameras have been recalibrated to enforce the new speed limit.

It comes as part of the city council’s Road Harm Reduction Strategy, which aims to reduce crashes and boost the transport network.

Councillor Majid Mahmood said it was an important measure to make the roads safer.

“Lower speeds mean safer streets, cleaner air and a more resilient transport network for everyone,” he said.

The local authority is working in partnership with West Midlands Police who will provide education and enforcement to help drivers adjust to new limits.

Assistant Chief Constable Mike O’Hara, added:

“We are completely focused on reducing the number of people who are killed and seriously injured on the roads of the West Midlands, and we know that speed is one of the main contributors to serious collisions.
