A £1.2 million scheme to extend a cycleway in Burton town centre has progressed to the second stage. 

The five-month project, delivered by Staffordshire County Council, will see a new two-way cycle track along Borough Road, linking Burton railway station directly with the Town Hall. 

It will join up with the existing cycleway that runs along Station Street, helping to make active travel in and around the town centre easier and safer. 

The work has now progressed to the second phase with a road closure in place on Borough Road between Station Court to the Curzon Street junction. There is also a lane closure on Borough Road to the junction with Wellington Street. 

Traffic is being diverted via Station Street, Union Street, Orchard Street, Evershed Way, Shobnall Road and Wellington Street.   

This phase will last around five weeks. Roadworks will then be suspended for two weeks from Sunday 15 February to allow for other essential road maintenance in the area without overloading the network. 

Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:

“It’s great to see this important scheme progressing well. Linking the railway station to the Town Hall with a dedicated cycle route will make it far easier and safer for people to walk, wheel or cycle around Burton, supporting a more active way of getting around the town centre. 

“We fully appreciate that roadworks can be disruptive, and I’d like to thank people for their patience while this phase takes place. Our crews are working hard to minimise disruption and keep everything on schedule. We’re also pausing construction for a short period in February to avoid overloading the network while other essential maintenance is carried out nearby. 

“When complete, this investment will bring long‑term benefits for residents, commuters and visitors, and will play a key part in making Burton a more accessible and better‑connected place.”
