Business Secretary responds to logistics industry’s call for recognition

The Secretary of State for Business and Trade has responded to a letter from leaders of the UK’s largest logistics and supply chain businesses calling on him to recognise logistics as a foundational sector in Industry Strategy, by replying that the sector is “critical to the UK’s economic prosperity, security and wellbeing”.

Jonathan Reynolds was replying to a letter in February in which 30 company bosses, including Grid Smarter Cities CEO Neil Herron, arguing that the critical supply chains delivered by the logistics sector underpin our whole economy and calling for it to have its proper place in the Industrial Strategy.

While Mr Reynolds did not say the sector could join the Industrial Strategy Council, he did commit to it being heard.

He writes: “Regarding the membership of the Industrial Strategy Council, the Council brings together experts from business, trade unions and academia who are working to shape the Industrial Strategy. They are engaging with Business Representative Organisations and businesses across the economy to inform their work. My team is also engaging widely to ensure co- creation is at the heart of the strategy.

“Relevant members of the Council have offered to meet with you and sector representatives to discuss the Council’s role in advising on the Industrial Strategy and hear from you on the needs of your sector. The Council secretariat will be in touch if this is an offer you wish to take up.”
