Canal & River Trust saves £12,000 with Teletrac Navman Dashcams

When a Canal River Trust professional was involved in a serious accident his van flipped and hit by two vehicles, the organisation’s investment in Teletrac Navman Smart Dashcams proved invaluable. Footage from the AI-powered TN360 platform cleared the driver of fault instantly, saved the Trust over £12,000 in insurance costs and reassured the driver they acted correctly.

The Trust had already installed forward and driver facing Smart Dash cameras by Teletrac Navman across its fleet, as part of its ongoing commitment to improving safety and workforce wellbeing through technology investments.

Thanks to the smart technology – the cameras being in operation and consequent footage available immediately in Teletrac Navman’s AI-powered TN360 fleet management platform, the Canal & River Trust professional was quickly cleared of
any potential fault, helping Canal & River Trust save upwards of £12,000 in insurance claim costs.

Adding to the positive outcomes, the Canal & River Trust professional has found the camera footage incredibly helpful in processing the incident, reassuring them that they did everything right.

Canal & River Trust is the charity responsible for managing the canals, rivers and locks of England and Wales, with specialists on the road all over the country, whose job it is to ensure waterways are safe, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone, while also preserving their historical and ecological significance. One of these professionals was driving to a job, travelling within the speed limit. There was nothing unusual about this trip, until a car going in the opposite direction drifted into his lane.

The van swerved slightly to avoid collision, but it was unavoidable. Within seconds, the van crashed and flipped on its side, coming to rest in the middle of the road. Moments later, a lorry struck the rear of the van. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured and an off-duty paramedic who happened to be driving by stopped and offered immediate assistance.

The driver of the car which caused the accident denied responsibility, leaving the Canal & River Trust facing a potentially expensive insurance claim.

Initially, the car driver denied any fault. However, footage from the Teletrac Navman cameras (installed inside the van and at its front) provided clear, indisputable evidence that quickly cleared the van driver of any blame. The in-cab driver-facing camera automatically saved the recording and made it instantly accessible through the TN360 fleet management platform. Evidence showed that the Canal & River Trust professional driver exhibited no irregular or dangerous behaviour before the
incident. Meanwhile, the forward-facing camera clearly captured the car swerving into the wrong lane, endangering the van and other road users.

The impact of Teletrac Navman’s Smart Dash cameras has been significant, conveying a powerful message for internal use, showing new technologies are worth the investment.
