Clearview Intelligence’s SolarLite road studs are known for their carbon-saving safety-improving performance on roads, but are now being used by the rail industry as well.
Operator Scotrail has had them installed in railway sidings to delineate driver walkways and depots where trains are parked up overnight.
The SolarLite road studs use high-visibility LED light to deliver clear guidance in all weather and lighting conditions – unlike traditional reflective studs which only shine when they are illuminated by headlights. Research has found that on roads, LED light gives drivers more time to react to road layouts, forthcoming junctions, or hazards, and can be seen for up to 900m, reducing crash rates by more than 70% compared to traditional lighting.
Customer Kelly Rail has told how “photos don’t do it justice” when describing the value of the studs in railway sidings.
“Our studs provide a carbon-free at point of installation solution, and hugely improve safety whether they’re used on roads, for cyclists and pedestrians or anywhere else that illumination is needed,” explained Alan Vass, Business Development Manager at Clearview Intelligence. “Even in the depths of a Scottish winter, the studs will shine all night following a few hours of daylight, so they are reliable, safe and have no power requirements so really should be the go-to solution for anyone looking for sustainable delineation.”
The studs are used across stretches of the road network, particularly in areas without streetlighting, and a range of solutions are being trialled in the successful Live Labs 2 project in the East Riding of Yorkshire, where an independent study proved hundreds of thousands of tons of CO2 could be saved if solar studs replace street lights, without any negative effect on road safety.
