Cross River Partnership report confirms benefits of Virtual Loading Bays

A new report published by London’s Cross River Partnership (CRP) has shown how using specific software to manage the kerbside for deliveries and collections has a significantly positive effect on urban high streets.

Delivered in collaboration with Grid Smarter Cities, CRP’s Kerbside Management Trial successfully delivered a network of eight Virtual Loading Bays across London.

Analysis of data gathered in the trial found that the trial alone led a reduction in vehicle kilometres travelled that delivered significant air quality benefits.  Operators highlighted the value of Virtual Loading Bays (VLBs) in providing a guaranteed delivery space, supporting more efficient freight activities, with a user-friendly booking platform.  It also found that “there is a clear appetite from Local Authorities to look at the use of kerbside space and different innovative approaches to management.”

VLBs are pre-approved loading spaces that can be booked via Grid’s Kerb® Delivery platform in advance in areas where loading and parking activity is usually prohibited. Restrictions such as yellow or red lines are then lifted for bookings made via the platform by commercial delivery drivers.

The trial was carried out with City of London Corporation, London Borough of Camden, London Borough of Lambeth, London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
