Projects range from an air purification product to tackle pollution to a pedestrian management system to enhance road safety.
It is hoped they will boost economic growth by creating jobs, leading to further innovation and confirming the UK’s position as a global leader in green transport.
Each project could secure up to £45,000 of funding for designs that would contribute to cleaner, greener, and more efficient transport networks.
This follows a £15 million investment over the last decade by the Transport Research and Innovation Grant (TRIG) programme, which supports industries researching new technologies and collaborations that help deliver economic growth.
This year’s funding aimed to focus on projects researching local transport decarbonisation, maritime decarbonisation and emerging technologies such as AI and drones.
Past projects include a project to tackle disruption at railway stations to help manage the flow of people and improve safety, and an invention that uses sound waves and music vibrations from a speaker to reduce pollution.
Mike Kane, Aviation, Maritime and Security Minister said: “Innovation is the driving force behind our transport system and these winning projects are leading the charge by creating cutting-edge solutions that could offer so much benefit for all.”
“With sustainability at the core of this year’s competition, we’re helping to shape the future of transport – making travel cleaner, safer, and more efficient for everyone.”
