Hargreaves Land has announced Monday 22 September as the commencement date for road improvement works at the Bankton Junction of the A1 in East Lothian. The work is anticipated to be completed in January 2026.
The first phase will take place at the north/eastbound slip road and will involve extension and widening works to help improve traffic flow.
A full closure of the north/eastbound slip road will be in place from 7.30pm on Monday 22 September 2025 to 6.30am on Tuesday 23 September 2025 to allow traffic management barriers to be put in place; traffic during this limited time will require to follow diversion routes.
Thereafter, works will generally be undertaken during off-peak daytime working hours between 9.30am and 3.30pm with a lane closure in place during the off-peak hours.
Investigation works at the north roundabout at Bankton Junction will be progressed at the same time as the works to the slip road. Further works to widen the roundabout and install traffic signals at the A1 off-slip at the roundabout will be progressed from January 2026 to March 2026.
Niall McLean, development director at Hargreaves Land, said:
“We are very pleased to confirm the details of this important project which will see significant investment made to improve traffic flow at Bankton Junction. These road improvement works are essential to cater for additional road users as Blindwells evolves. We have put a robust schedule in place and look forward to seeing the works progress over the coming months.”
The Bankton Junction project will be undertaken by Luddon Construction on behalf of Hargreaves Land who has been leading on the design in collaboration with Transport Scotland and East Lothian Council.
