East Riding recognised for pioneering low-carbon road lighting approach

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has won a prestigious award in recognition of its work to reduce the amount of streetlighting across its area by using Clearview Intelligence SolarLite road studs along with high-reflectivity signage and road marking.

At the Decarbonising Transport event at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in Central London, tthe council won the: Best Highways Decarbonisation Award, which recognised its “Decarbonising StreetLighting – Right Light Right Place Right Time” initiative, which utilised the innovative approaches to achieve a 40-60% whole-life carbon reduction.

The project was part of the Live Labs 2 project in the East Riding of Yorkshire, which has successfully shown how rethinking the way roads are illuminated allows councils to safely remove street lighting, cut carbon emissions and make significant cost savings while maintaining road safety.

The SolarLite studs deliver clear guidance in all weather and lighting conditions – unlike traditional reflective studs which only shine when they are illuminated by headlights.  The LED lights give drivers more time to react to road layouts, forthcoming junctions, or hazards, and can be seen for up to 900 metres. Independent research has shown they can reduce crash rates by more than 70%.

“Local residents in East Riding of Yorkshire have already provided overwhelmingly positive feedback and encourage the replacement of traditional lighting columns with this new low carbon delineation solution which gives them back their dark skies and maintains or even improves road safety,” commented Clearview Intelligence’s Head of Business Development, Ralph Bates.  “Rather than local authorities designing in swathes of street lighting on new road developments, because that’s what they’ve always done, they can actually now be better informed.  We can show that there’s a better way of doing things with huge carbon savings as well as huge financial savings.

“We’re thrilled to have been a part of this award-winning scheme and congratulate all our friends at East Riding of Yorkshire.”

The East Riding council also won the Best Data and Digital Innovation for Decarbonisation Award, with an AI Behavioural Analytics tool.
