Work is underway to install new average speed cameras along the A414 in Essex. The Jenoptik cameras are being installed between Chelmsford and Harlow and are part of ongoing efforts to make the road safer.
Average speed cameras help reduce serious collisions and improve compliance with speed limits.
To keep roadworkers safe while the cameras are installed, a temporary 40mph speed limit will be in force for the next five to six weeks. The installation is expected to be completed by mid‑March.
The new cameras will support last year’s speed limit changes between Widford roundabout and the B181 at Tylers Green. These included reducing some 50mph sections to 40mph. It also included lowering national speed limit areas to either 50mph or 40mph.
Councillor Mark Platt, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure and Sustainable Transport, said:
“We are taking vital steps to reduce the number of fatal and serious collisions on this road by introducing improved speed enforcement with these new cameras. As partners in the Safer Essex Roads Partnership, we are committed to working together to make the A414 safe for everyone.”
Will Cubbin, Partnership Manager at the Safer Essex Roads Partnership, added:
“Speed is one of the most significant contributing factors in serious and fatal collisions. Lower speeds on the A414 will create a safer environment not only for drivers, but also for pedestrians and cyclists.”
