“Exciting” technical visits confirmed for ITS European Congress in Seville

Delegates at the 16th ITS European Congress next month will get the opportunity to a wide range of transport technology solutions around traffic management, autonomous shuttles and logistics during a number of technical visits to cutting-edge sites around Seville.

Technical visits are a key part of the event, which also includes three days of Plenary, Technical and Special Interest Sessions, an exhibition featuring more than a hundred exhibitors and a range of demonstrations.

Delegates can sign up to visit the DGT Traffic Management Centre of Seville and Seville City Council’s Mobility Centre to witness first-hand how technology and real-time data manage the city’s roadways, while they can also ride on a Level 4 autonomous, connected shuttle service and see one of Amazon’s most advanced robotics-enabled distribution centres.

“This is an excellent opportunity to see present and future smart mobility solutions,” explained Francisco Sánchez Pons from CTAG, who co-ordinated the Congress’s technical visits. “This is an attractive programme that we believe showcases the advanced transport technology we have in and around Seville.”

Other technical visits include trips to the city’s Port Management Centre (pictured), the CATEC advance aerospace technologies centre and Airbus plant, and along the connected corridor between the FIBES Convention Centre and the city’s airport, which features real-time traffic information, hazard alerts and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication.

As well as being frequently voted Spain’s most beautiful city and having excellent transport links and a modern, efficient congress centre, Seville is at the forefront of innovation in greener, sustainable transport.  Its Plan Seville Respira promotes sustainable mobility, universal accessibility, and quality of public space.  It is investing in technology to better manage roads and public transport – things participants will see and experience for themselves at the Congress.

“Technical visits are always a key part of our events,” explained Joost Vantomme, CEO of ERTICO – ITS Europe who organise the Congress.  “They give a chance for delegates and visitors to get out of the Congress Centre and experience first-hand real-world innovations in the host city.  This year’s technical visits are particularly exciting and impressive because they take in so many different transport modes, so I would strongly urge people to register for the event and then sign up for their visits before places run out, and remember – if you sign up now, you’ll take advantage of our Early Bird rates!”

The ITS European Congress is expected to be attended by more than 3,500 people, roughly split half-and-half between public and private sectors.  It takes place at the Fibes Exhibition and Congress Centre in Seville from 19-21 May.  The city is served by direct flights from more than 50 cities across Europe with the airport only five kilometres from the Congress Centre, which is close to the city centre with thousands of hotel rooms nearby.
