Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet is to meet today to agree highway maintenance work over £46 million over the next year.
Councillors will be considering a report at the meeting which sets out the full extent of the work planned from April this year to March 2022.
The council plans to improve the condition of the county’s roads by surface dressing 260 roads, resurfacing 78 roads and 65 pavements, 84 miles of roads will be surface dressed, and 11.5 miles will be resurfaced.
Money will also be targeted at improvements to drains and measures to prevent flooding. Road safety will also be a key priority and 46 safety schemes will aim to reduce the numbers of people killed or seriously injured in accidents. Improvements will also be made to the cycle network.
The report also recommends the development of a new five-year forward programme and identifies a number of roads and pavements that will be included.
Councillor Simon Spencer, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, said: “The report sets out a clear plan which will see the team spend over £46 million on vital repairs and improvements across the county over the coming year for our residents.
“The programme includes a number of highways schemes that previously we weren’t able to do because of the severe flooding in November 2019, February 2020 and February 2021, the Toddbrook dam incident in the summer of 2019 and the impact of COVID-19.
“All these events both took up weeks and months of many members of the highways team, and we have had many more roads needing repairs because of the flooding.
“Our road worker teams will continue to carry out the same levels of work they have in previous years, but we will make more use of external suppliers to help us deliver many more improvements on our network.
“We will spend around £40 million every year for the next three years to deliver this huge amount of schemes and improvements to our network and I’m confident that the measures we are putting in place will mean that we can deliver this programme, and keep Derbyshire on the move.”
