Industry grandee Eric Sampson joins impressive list of JCT session chairs

The widely respected Intelligent Transport Systems expert Prof Eric Sampson CBE will be one of a number of distinguished guests leading the conversation at the popular JCT Traffic Signals Symposium in September, chairing the learned programme of papers during the event.

The two-day symposium features 27 separate presentations covering a range of topics around cutting-edge signals technology, including Artificial Intelligence, driver behaviour, drone use and floating vehicle data.  There will also be a special session with a Government Security Advisor showing the range of malicious threats facing sites and sectors and the vulnerabilities that can be mitigated by forethought and the design and specification of proportionate countermeasures.

Eric Sampson spent nearly 40 years working in the Department for Transport and is now Visiting Professor at Newcastle and City Universities, as well as continuing to support a range of organisations including ERTICO – ITS Europe, ITS UK and the Transport Technology Forum.  He is joined by two other highly experienced industry figures, the former ITS (UK) Secretary General Jennie Martin MBE, who is now a Trustee at PACTS, and the industry’s pioneer in understanding transport emissions, Professor Margaret Bell CBE from Newcastle University. Other Chairs include LCRIG CEO Paula Claytonsmith and SWARCO’s Mike Guerwin.

There are 30 exhibitors showing the latest in signals technology at the event.  Delegate sign-ups are already running at double the number at this time last year.  JCT is also offering 70% off tickets for up to three Early Careers Professionals from any organisation to attend the 2024 Symposium and Exhibition.  Full terms and conditions are available on the JCT Symposium website.

“The Symposium papers programme filled up earlier than ever this year, and along with the high calibre of chairs, it shows how popular and respected our event is,” commented JCT Director John Nightingale who oversees the Symposium’s organisation and who will host one of the sessions.  “Our programme is first rate programme of papers, our exhibition packed and brilliant, and there are, as always, lots of opportunities to catch up with old friends and make new ones at our sponsored networking events.”

The 29th JCT Traffic Signals Symposium at Nottingham Trent University takes place Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 September, with the first evening social event and the MOVA User Group taking place the day before.  The Wednesday evening involves the SWARCO Drinks Reception and must-attend Yunex Traffic Gala Dinner.
