New 20mph speed limits will be introduced across Inverclyde’s roads network in April. Drivers are being encouraged to be ready for the change from 30mph to 20mph when it takes effect on Monday 27 April 2026 in over 1000 local roads.
The changes are being implemented by Inverclyde Council in line with the national 20mph strategy and with support from Transport Scotland.
Transport Scotland will also introduce 20mph speed limits on parts of the trunk road network at the same time, including on the A78 in Greenock, with Wemyss Bay already in effect.
Most main roads in the local and trunk roads networks, such as Eldon Street, Drumfrochar Road and the A8, will remain at the current 30mph or 40mph speed limits.
The rollout of the lower speed limits in built-up areas follows a comprehensive analysis of Inverclyde’s roads network assessed against fixed criteria set by Transport Scotland.
Many locations in Inverclyde already have 20mph speed limits in place including near schools and in town and village centres. New 20mph speed limit signs are being installed in locations across the area where the speed limit will come into force.
A spokesperson for Inverclyde Council said:
“The scheme aligns with the national 20mph strategy and is designed to improve road safety in built-up areas across Inverclyde. Slower vehicles create safer spaces for everyone to enjoy, improving the quality of life for everyone in our communities.
“While there are over 1,000 roads being changed to 20mph zones, it’s important that people familiarise themselves with the roads that are changing but also the roads that will remain at their current speed limit.”
